What are the conditions facing the working class on Labor Day 2026? More than 21,000 autoworker jobs have been wiped out since the start of 2024. For every dollar of what workers produce in this country, less than 53 cents comes back to us in wages. That is the lowest share since the government started measuring it in 1947.
Our paychecks do not cover groceries and rent. My name is Will Lehman. I work at Mack Trucks in Macungie, Pennsylvania, and I am running for president of the United Auto Workers Union.
On June 12th, three days before the UAW Constitutional Convention opened, Elon Musk became the first trillionaire in human history. The richest 1% in this country own nearly a third of everything in it. The bottom half of us own barely 2.5%.
More than 5,000 workers are killed on the job in this country every year. This summer, workers were carried out of our plants on stretchers while wildfire smoke filled the buildings and management kept the lines running. Four of our brothers, Antonio Gaston, Ronald Adams Sr., Gregory Knopf, and James Brasher, have been killed under the contract UAW President Shawn Fain and Vice President Rich Boyer called “historic.”
These are not separate problems. They are part of the same offensive of the ruling class, which is cutting our wages, waging world war, sending ICE agents after immigrant workers, and tearing up our democratic rights.
The working class has enormous social power. We build everything in this country. However, our hands are tied because the unions are run by a layer of bureaucrats whose salaries, whose investments, and whose whole position in life are tied to the companies and not to us. Today, the officials will march in Labor Day parades and lie about their role in allowing all of this to take place.
I am running for president of the UAW to spearhead a rank-and-file rebellion among auto workers and other workers in the UAW and in the working class as a whole in the United States and throughout the world.
